5 /5 Wai Ling Fong: I took a guided tour of the Owens-Thomas House & Slave Quarters and gained valuable insight into its history, including the various owners of the house and the Owens-Thomas family, who held the property the longest. The tour offered a fascinating yet sobering look at the lives of those who lived there—both the wealthy occupants and the enslaved individuals who labored behind the scenes. It was eye-opening to explore the contrast between the grandeur on display and the harsh realities hidden from view.
I enjoyed reading letters written by the family which offered a rare glimpse into how they communicated and navigated their lives in a personal way.
I also appreciated the tour guides’ thoughtful and intentional language when discussing this complex history. They took the time to explain distinctions between terms like "slave" vs. "enslaved individuals", ensuring a more accurate and respectful understanding of the past.
Located in the Savannah Historic District, this tour is a meaningful and educational experience. Highly recommended for anyone looking to better understand Savannah’s history.
