5 /5 Michele Carter: This hidden gem is very worth a visit. You must arrange for the guided tour in advance by contacting the non-profit organization which runs the property. Harriet is very knowledgeable of the property. She is wonderful at sharing her wealth of knowledge about the property. This lovely house which was lovingly restored by renowned artist Bill Hanes after it was destroyed by fire in the 1930s. Mr. Hanes was a printer who ran the letterpress Ashantilly Press, and his beautiful work is seen everywhere in the house. You can get a personal tour of the printshop and demonstration of the letterpress printing method from Sara the printer. And while the tour is free, your donations will be appreciated, since maintaining and restoring the property takes money!

Debra Prevatte: Interesting little museum, AC felt wonderful. Nice shaded nature trail. The short walk to the Fort isnt shady so the heat & humidity hits hard. Then the biting flies start attacking aka deer flies. Your pace will quicken lol. Great history stop. We enjoyed it.

Xyla Dee: Located within the walls of Dariens old jail, is a hidden room of art from students of all ages. There are books featuring a wide range of art platforms. I could truly sit for hours and just soak in the information and impressions of art. Ot is so fascinating to see how humans all interpret emotion so vividly. A very nice surprise finding. Cannons Point Preserve
Adam Brumbaugh: Cannons Point Preserve is a beautiful and peaceful spot on the island, perfect for nature lovers and history enthusiasts alike. We initially planned to explore the longer 4+ mile trail but opted for the shorter route instead, which led us to a unique squirrel’s-view lookout tower with a great vantage point. The preserve is full of towering live oaks, wildlife, and scenic marsh views, making it a great place to disconnect and enjoy the outdoors. Next time, we’ll definitely bring our bikes to fully experience the longer trail. Highly recommend for a quiet, off-the-beaten-path adventure!

Thomas Burpee: My wife and I were just looking for some place to go. This place is AMAZING!!! So peaceful and yet so very alive. Jurrasic park alive! The wildlife is almost overwhelming. Gators, Storks by the hundreds, Egrets and Comerants. All in a calming, peaceful, and natural silence. We found our "go too" spot
    Oglethorpe Mural -
Alabama OUTSIDErs: An Oglethorpe/Macon County-themed mural by artist, Jacqueline Fontenot. Made possible by Flint Energies and Flint Energies Foundation, Macon County Board of Commissioners, City of Oglethorpe, and Oglethorpe Downtown Development Authority. Right in the heart of the city!

DeAnn Dent: Very neat place to put in your kayak/canoe. Amazing sight: The golden silk (orb weavers) spiders were so plentiful when we were there that we ended up trying to count them. We counted over 100 on only one side, of the boat ramp lane. They lined the road along and all the way to the boat ramp, on both sides and were hanging from trees as far into the woods as we could see. They are camouflaged very well. We left them to their habitat. Interesting sight to see.
    Lake Chapman - Athens
    Lake Chapman
Asif Iqbal: Lake Chapman is a hidden gem in Georgia, perfect for nature lovers, hikers, and anyone looking for a peaceful retreat. Located within Sandy Creek Park, this lake offers a serene escape with stunning views, well-maintained trails, and plenty of recreational activities. One of the highlights of Lake Chapman is its beautiful, calm waters, ideal for kayaking, canoeing, and paddleboarding. The lake is spacious enough to enjoy a relaxing time on the water without feeling crowded. The boat ramp makes it easy to launch, and you can also rent equipment if you don’t have your own. For those who prefer land activities, the hiking trails around the lake are fantastic. They are well-marked, relatively easy to navigate, and surrounded by lush greenery. Whether youre looking for a short stroll or a longer hike, the trails offer plenty of scenic spots, including small bridges, picnic areas, and even some wildlife sightings. Fishing is another great option at Lake Chapman. The lake is stocked with fish, making it a great spot for both beginners and experienced anglers. There are designated fishing areas, and you’ll often see people casting their lines from the shore or small boats. The park itself is clean and well-maintained, with picnic shelters, restrooms, and ample parking. There’s even a small sandy beach area where visitors can relax or take a swim. It’s a great spot for families, solo adventurers, and even pets, as the park is dog-friendly (with designated areas for them to play). Overall, Lake Chapman is a peaceful and beautiful getaway that offers something for everyone. Whether youre visiting for a day of kayaking, a scenic hike, or just to relax by the water, this place is well worth the trip. Highly recommend for anyone looking to enjoy Georgia’s natural beauty! #LakeChapman #GeorgiaNature #PeacefulEscape #Hiking #Kayaking #Fishing
