5 /5 T.L.S.: A blonde brownie and a peach soda. All pastries and cakes are homemade by the owner, even the chicken salad and pimento cheese and will leave your mouth watering and going back for more! The owners son, Gus, who is 8, can whip up a mean flavored coffee of his own creation like there is no tomorrow and he does this often. He is referred to as the boss of this establishment. He is an old soul yet maintains his innocent charm with freckles scattered across his nose. He has been known to pick out and ring up his own merchandise. It is so obvious those two are close and love each other very much. You may think he can get away with anything, but he is grounded, smart, funny, charming, personable and polite, yet maintains a whitty, playful youth. I think he will grow to be your quintessential, southen gentleman. His mother, Lesley, is an amazing, beautiful and brave women. Youll have to let her tell you her story and Gus to tell you his. They both have powerful testimonies. I was asked to describe the Mercantile, so why am i going on about the owner and her son? Because, they ARE the merchantile! I promise, you will leave this charming establishment a better person just by having a chat, coffee and a mouth watering pastry with one or both of them. She has incredible home made soaps, lotions, essential oils, and clothing, even some plus sized clothing which is practically unheard of in a small business, that is in a small town, made by small businesses, some local and some not so local. She and her son have powerful yet beautiful testimonies. The Merchantile is a small store in a small town with BIG charm. I could gush on and on about this store and its charm, but you need to have a reason to go alone and leave full and blessed. We will be visiting again, so leave the lights on, Gus.
